Today we'd like to introduce you to Tichina Anderson.
Tichina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Yonkers, NY. Growing up my grandmother owned the home that me and my other relatives lived in. We weren't rich by any means but lived comfortably together. The high school I attended had about three different magnet programs, including the Academy of Finance program. Being a part of that program is what led me to my 1st internship at the Board of Education, where I worked for seven years whilst going to college.
My favorite thing about that job was my ability to hire students from the same program and help them with their 1st office jobs. I eventually was able to expand it to other high schools and reached more students. It was working that job that led me to realize my real passion was helping people. When I graduated from college, I was hesitant to leave that job because of departing from those students. Fortunately for me, I found Teach For America. A company who is working to realize the day when every child has an equal opportunity to learn, grow, influence, and lead. Thanks to that company, I was awarded the opportunity to visit classrooms and hear from our students and teachers about the challenges they face. I got to see first hand and internalize the inequities in our black and brown communities.
As I started thinking about what was next for my future, I thought back on some of the necessities that our children were lacking. I recalled conversations I've had with friends and the home-buying process. I recalled conversations about how people weren't getting ahead because there wasn't any generational wealth. I took all of that and decided to obtain my real estate license. I wanted to be able to learn everything I could about it and dispel the myths that prevented people from being homeowners.
Great, so let's dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you've had to overcome?
It has definitely not been easy being an agent. There is so much that goes into being an agent that I didn't realize. The first reality was how expensive it was to even begin. Before you even get to a deal, you are dishing out a few hundred dollars for schooling, money to take the exam, money to pay for your license, research and money to choose a firm and more money to join a real estate board (if your company requires it). I say all of that to say, it can get very expensive so just make sure you're budgeting if this is something you're considering getting into.
Another challenge for me is changing mindsets. I was so used to being a person that needs to learn everything that can be learned because I like to be confident in what I'm saying. Real Estate is a field that is constantly changing so I had to throw that out of the window and be comfortable talking to people without knowing the answer to everything. This can especially be challenging when dealing with people that are older. I have always been the young one in the company and have had resistance from people because they didn't appreciate someone younger giving direction. I was able to overcome that because I learn quickly and prefer to speak when I know everything. Again, with real estate, it is always changing. With my peers, it's challenging to get them to take the leap from renting to homeownership. I have to talk about what we call the $60K question. If you are paying $1K a month in rent for five years, you are ultimately paying your landlord $60K with no equity.
Alright – so let's talk business. What else should we know about your work?
I am a REALTOR® specializing as a buyers and sellers' agent with Better Homes and Gardens Metro Brokers. When it came time to choosing a company to work with, I did ample research to ensure I was choosing the best company to work for. I am thrilled to say I signed up with a company that offers excellent training, has incredibly knowledgeable people there, and business affiliations to ensure I am offering the best service. In my very first office meeting, they implemented new tools to ensure we are able to inform and support clients dealing with internet home buying companies that do not have the client's best interest. Their willingness and ability to always learn and do better is what I'm most proud of.
Besides having highly trained agents, one thing that sets us apart is our accessibility. We have over 27 offices located throughout Metro Atlanta. This allows us, unlike other companies to be able to close at offices that are convenient for those we interact with.
What sets me apart from other agents, is my heart. I pride myself being authentic and compassionate to anyone I come in contact. My main goal is doing what's best for my client, whether that is educating them or just being an ear for them. Buying a home is typically the largest purchase an individual will make in their life. Knowing that I will always do what's best for my clients.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My authenticity and my personality are what allows me to be successful. I have always been an honest person and a great listener. This has led me to truly hear what a person needs and answering any questions that may have honestly. I feel that people can tell I have their best interest at heart because of that and it is what ultimately makes them want to work with me.
